QOTD: Sorry I missed the past two days

Not like anybody cares. But I didn't have much time to be here.

Started my truck on Sunday morning. Heard a horrendous noise under the hood and then a stink like I have never smelled before. It wasn't the worst smell I ever smelled (that was a lower G.I. bleed) but it was something new.

It was the stink of shredded skunk.

I needed to replace all the belts and the fan and I've spent the past two days cleaning the engine bay and under carriage with an enzyme cleaner to get rid of the stink. It's mostly gone now. Sometimes I can smell it if the windows are down and the truck is hot. Animal control dude told me to get a couple of black lights and leave them on under the truck for a while. The UV apparently breaks down the scent molecules faster. He said a few days of that when the truck isn't moving anywhere and it'll be gone.

Go ahead and laugh. "Couldn't happen to a nicer guy", yada, yada, yada. You're cool.

All I know is that there is one very dead skunk and that kinda makes me happy. Maybe the neighbor's cats will get the hint?

That's ok. I have the skunk carcass in a hermetically sealed container, ready for deposit in your air conditioning intake port some time around the end of June. Should be fun! Can't wait!

Is there any chance of using those skunk shampoos for dogs on this? Our Cattle Dog used to get skunked every so often (until she learned, finally) and this shampoo was very effective indeed. She didn't even have to sleep in the garage, not even on the same night as she was skunked. The smell was completely gone, without a trace, within a day, usually by the very next morning (even when you would first walk into the room where she usually sleeps).

Had to do a little searching, but finally found it. I saw it on an episode of Mythbusters and it was the only one that was "Confirmed" even tomato juice was only "Plausiable" Links below to the sites.

No, sorry. I'm a fan but my paycheck does not say Dallas Cowboys at the top. Besides, everybody said they wouldn't even make the playoffs and they had a good run.

It's clear that there is a problem with the leadership of the team. Either coaching staff or QB. The rest of the team is extremely talented and cohesive. If they get the leadership stuff straightened out and get some consistency, they are going to run over the rest of the NFL. But they are out of it. Now I'm no longer torn and I can root for the Saints in good conscience. The Vikings have had 4 chances and blew every one of them. It's been far too long for the Saints to have a shot at the trophy.

Wow, I've heard of animals crawling up in to the engine compartment, but you don't often hear of skunks doing it, and even more rare that you hear of them actually getting caught in a moving part. That's some bad luck...

Thanks but, like I said, I have an enzyme based cleaner that worked just fine. The issue is that I can't necessarily get to all the places that could have been affected.

And no, tomato juice doesn't do anything but make it all smell like rotten tomatoes.

Yeah ... that's the one most people suggest. We tried it once, but it didn't seem to work much better than just using ordinary shampoo (which you still have to use to get the tomato juice out). Ordinary shampoo does work, but you have to do it at least twice, and there is still a faint smell close up for a week or so.

This is the stuff we have been using. It's not expensive, and you don't wash it off until the smell has gone (we usually wash it off the same day if it's not too late). It has been so effective in our experience that we don't even worry about it much any more.

Lightman's method only works if absolutely everyone present drinks enough Bloody Marys to not smell anything any more, which doesn't help the poor doggie much.

It's been cold here lately and the animal control guy said he's had quite a few calls about skunks and raccoons getting in to places they shouldn't be just trying to stay warm. It doesn't take much either to get a part sucked up. Skunks have long hairs on their tails and there are 3 serpentine belts on teh front of my engine. It's easy enough.

This isn't the first time this has happened to me either. When I was in my apartment, I had one of the trucks from a friend's lawn service company. It was snowing and I was driving a plow for him 'cause he was short handed. I drove the plow truck home and parked it in the lot. He came by in the morning to pick up the truck and drop mine off for me and when he started it, he shredded somebody's cat. He was so tired he didn't even bother cleaning it up and just drove it back to the shop to clean it out later.
