    Default PS3 only player

I'm guessing I'm not alone, unexpectedly rediscovering 2-channel music while building a multi-channel home theater on a shoe-string budget.

I'm using a 40gb SONY PS3 which does NOT play SACD as my player and I'm stuck with that for now.

I've taken to converting flac files to .wav for playback from the ps3.

Is there anyone else in this stage of evolution? I'm consumed with finding the highest fidelity 2ch and multi-ch content that I can play on my 40gb ps3.

    What's out there?

Yeah I need to find a new USB dac, using a creative MP3+ right now.

It's useful though, I take it outside and attach it to my "ghetto blaster" and it works well.

LOL, you are living in the stone age. That's the way I do it for now, but my 80GB does SACD, so I am getting ready to dabble in that soon.

There are also some blu-ray concert and the rare blu-ray music only disk. Look for 24bit/96khz and 24bit/192khz blu-rays for the high quality stuff. The latter tends to be only classical and the like from companies like 2L.

Good point....that might be your 'best' sounding music....it might also help to put some better DACs between your PS3 and your AVR or whatever power source you're using......

I also use my laptop, google's PS3 media server and a higher end Onkyo AVR in the mix. But that's more for 'casual listening'....Of couse I record everything as a wav lossless file--and stream it to the PS3..

You can also store files locally if you want. For 50 bucks or so you can change the internal hard drive out for a 320GB or larger one. Really depends on where you find most convenient for all your files. It can also access external drives via the usb ports. Just have to make sure the external drive is formatted fat32.

The ps3 internally uses generic SATA laptop size hard drives. There are plenty of 'how to' videos of how easy it is to change one on youtube. Basically pop the little plastic door off, unscrew one screw, slide the old one out, transfer the cage to the new one, reverse. Then the ps3 prompts you to format the new drive on boot up. A few extra steps are necessary if you want to save data from the old drive.

Lots of universal players out there now that can be had on the cheap. A lot do SACD as well.

Even if your PS3 doesn't play SACD (and I know the 40GB one doesn't) it still plays DSD Disc format. See http://www.ps3sacd.com/dsddiscguide.html

This may be the highest fidelity 2-channel media you can find. The only issue is that unless you record some yourself you will not have much content (yet).
