    Default Surrounds for 7.1 Set-Up

    Hello,

I just realized that I have 5 speakers, and just purchased a 7.1 Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver. What would you guys recommend for the set up? I have RTi8's coming from the front L-R, CSi5 Center, and 2 Monitor 30s.

Would you guys recommend moving the Monitors to the Side surrounds? And then using something else for the rear surrounds? or vice versa?

Additionally, what would be a good cheap option for the addition 2 speakers? More Monitors?

    Let me know!

Oh and Im still deciding between a PSW505, or DSW Pro 600(if I can get a good deal on eBay store) for the sub. Currently I have an infinity sub.

you might try RTiA3 for front wides to match RTi8. I have tried the RTiA3 and theey do sound good for the money. I just got into 7.1 also and the front wide has more information than rear or surrounds so I used LSi9 for front wide on my setup and Lsi7 for surrounds

The OP has an Onkyo 805, which doesn't have Dolby ProLogic IIz...so he can't use wide or height channels.

I'd recommend going with either a pair of RTi6's, or a pair of FXi3's or FXi5's for the surrounds. I used to run RTi8's with a CSi5 up front, with RTi6's in back, all running off an Onkyo 606. It made for a great sounding HT.

You could also get away with just getting a second pair of Monitor 30's and running the 30's for all of the surrounds. The Monitor series isn't timbre matched to the RTi series, but timbre matching is less crucial between fronts and surrounds, than it is between the front channels and center channel.

If you decide to go the RTi6/FXi3/5 route, you'd probably want to use the new pair for "side" surrounds, and move the Monitor 30's to the back.

    Just my $.02

edit-Damn you Jeff!! Quit copying my posts!!:p;)

Forgot to mention, I agree with Jeff on the sub issue. The PSW505 is a fine sub(especially for the prices they've been going for lately), but the DSWPro 600 is a much better sub IMO. It digs lower, and with much more authority. The DSWPro is quite a bit more musical sounding too in my experience, if that's a concern for you.

If you are just going 7.1 I would first make sure you have room for them. One of the most important things in setting up a 7.1 system is to make sure your room will benifit from it. If you have a "smallish" room a well setup 5.1 will outperform a cramped up 7.1 anyday. A couple more Monitor 30's probably wouldn't be the worst choice if you do go 7.1, since timbre matching isn't as important with the surrounds. There are AVR's that do 9.1/9.2, but the 805 isn't one of them. IMHO the new presence/height speakers are a gimmick, but that is just my opinion. There is a guy here who runs a 9.1 and he is very happy with it, but his name escapes me. As for your sub, they are both very good choices, but are also very good at different things. If you do more HT than 2 ch. I would go with the 505, and vice versa if you do more 2 ch. than HT. Both are good options though, so it is really up to you and your budget. The DSW line is a better overall sub, but also a bit more spendy. Good luck and let us know how it works out.
