Monitor 5+ jr

I recently had these given to me and I discovered they need new woofers, tweeters and passive radiators.

I called Polk tech and inquired about availability. They carry the woofers and tweeters, not the passive radiators. These are 6.5" woofers and radiators.

Anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone used another brand woofer or tweeter to replace them?

The cost of repair may be greater than buying another pair from your local CL. They are available for sale all the time. ($50 or less)

You're going to be very hard pressed to find those passive radiators. The 6.5" PR's don't pop up for sale very often.

+1, are you sure about your findings? I've never heard of, or seen a set of speakers that had everything wrong with them.

I've got an extra pair of minty passive radiators from my M5jr. No need for them as I'm going a different direction.

You say that all the drivers need replacing. Are your speakers producing any sound or is it distorted? It is possible that someone abused them. But could it be your source or amp or wiring?

If the MWs are producing no sound, you will not get anything out of the PRs as they are passive and respond to pressure produced by the MWs. There is not much that can go wrong with a PR outside of physical damage (ie. holes punched in the cone or surround).

Hopefully there is some easier problem than a global failure of drivers and passive radiators.

They do come up on ebay and recently I've seen about 3 different listings, or if a member here has a pair. In a pinch glue can be used but only for small tears, not medium to large tears

Sorry, I wasn't intending to pick on your user name. After sketchy info and no replies I thought maybe you were Polking some fun with us. We get some jokers around here. Pretty clever name though. We are glad to help you as best we can.

The rubber surrounds are usually very rugged and it is surprising that they are torn but be that as it may... If you really have to replace all the drivers and PR's then the bill could easily exceed the price of another set of 5jr's. If the drivers failed due to over stress then the crossovers may also be damaged and need a rebuild.

If your cabinets are in good shape it might be worth while picking up a set of 5j'r that are cosmetically rough for cheap and swap the drivers. In any case, it can be a rewarding project.

Sorry I missed your reply. I just cleaned out my subscription list and saw I hadn't replied back.
There is an abundance of "FNG" BS from time to time and I just shrugged it off. My apologies for being "snooty" if ya may.
One of the regulars here snagged the passive radiators I pictured a couple of days after this post.
I have a minty pair of the later passives for 5jrs if you still need them.
I'll post them FS in a day or two if I don't hear back.

Perhaps it would help if you posted some pictures so that we can better assess the physical damage.
