How to prevent boomy bass ?

The only available listening position in my room puts me right next to a wall. Here the bass becomes boomy and overpowering, what is the best thing to do to still get good tight bass ?

Either way I would put a bunch of 12" by 12" acoustic wall panels up to disperse the sound and minimise reflection

I'm close to the wall, my head is literally about a foot away from the wall.

Well buy some pannels or try experimentation using things you have laying around to start with ie, pillows or heavy duty floor rugs etc.....

Will putting something that absorbes sound directly behind my head help ?

Yes it should but not if the speakers are too close the wall thats behind them because that back wall is going to reinforce the bass

This happened to myself in my surround sound setup I had my fxi3 too close to the wall . They were on stands and about 8inch close so when I played music on all channel stereo I could hear a huge thumping coming from them and it caused a bass extension so loud that they overpowerd the rti6's and 8's

If the speakers are to close then your just turning that whole wall into a speaker

I may have that problem too now, my surrounds are about a foot from the rear wall. How far should the fronts be from the wall behind them ?

Well I have mine about 3 ft and my surround sound about 20 iinch but the further away from the walls and corners you can get them the better they sound . If you cant do this then acoustic wall panels is the way to go .

If you wana get crazy with the wall panels them you could eliminate the reflection on the side walls with acoustic panels . A good way would be to get one of the wifes little makeup mirrors and hold it flat on the side wall .Now walk along the length and wait till you see your first speaker in the reflection and you have found your first point to apply your acoustic panels . Repeat this on the opposite wall and your well on your way to studio quality sound

Theres also acoustic window shades you can add because glass seriously messes with your soundstage

I`ve been looking into acustic panels. I`m not sure if the thickness counts alot. I saw some panels at sams club that seems like a good price. Would i be wasting my money buying a 1" thick panel? My room is 12x20.. I didnt want to cover the entire room, just behing the fronts and sub. any thoughts would be helpful.
