    Default "high front" speaker choice

I plan to try the following using a DENON AVR 590 receiver (5.1 but with capability to add two additional "high front" speakers): use M70's as front main speakers and R170's for the high fronts(along with a CS200 center, R15's as rear surround and a PSW10 for subwoofer). Good or bad idea?, (at least as far as potential damage to the receiver)??

IMHO, I would forgo the idea of the front height speakers and maybe look into adding a matching center to those 70's or possibly a better sub. I'm assuming that you already have the speakers, so in that case the Denon will have no problem operating those speakers. Also, looking at the back of the 590, it doesn't have terminal type connections for the height speakers, it has pre outs, which means you will need an external amp in order to power them. Also, if memory serves me the R170's are floorstanders, yes? In that case, they would not be ideal to use in that application since the presence or height speakers are exactly that, mounted above and inward of the front speakers. Using the 170's would essentially be like running two sets of front speakers, which isn't a good idea, IMHO. The speakers you have listed are all 8 ohm speakers so the Denon will have no problem with them. Good luck and welcome to Club Polk.
