    Default New construction project

Started a new project yesterday. Now that the house is nearly painted I needed to put away the rollers and brushes and break out the saws, hammer and nails.

I'm building a patio cover over the back of my daughters bedroom to keep the sun off and the heat down, but, I am also going to use it as a sundeck. It will be stained the same color as the Tiki Hut to match the rest of the back yard with maybe even some tin roof material thrown in. I'll also build a set of stairs for it. It's about 8' up off the ground and about 100sf.

Here's a couple of pics as of today...

Looks nice, but put the hammer and nails down and get a screw gun and a bucket of screws. You'll thank me later ;)

One word....slope. No slope no water drain= rotten deck in a few years. I install vinyl decking for a living and fully understand the importance of slope on a deck/roof. Looking good so far.

Screws do not let the wood flex when it expands and contracts and as it heats up and cools off it leads to split and warped wood. That's a critical thing in a place like SoCal where intense daily sun can drive material temperatures up quite high and cool nights can mean as much as a 40 degree change in the temperature of the materials used in the construction. Nails allow for that flex which alleviates the splitting and distortion problem. I wouldn't use screws on that project. Glue and nails is the way to go.

I don't think I have used screws in any construction except where I don't want flex, like in sub boxes.
You're just jealous 'cause the voices don't talk to you!

I'm using deck screws, framing nails and lag screws.

So Ron when can you come over? I see you building things all the time. I would like some work done around my house. You seem like the perfect man for the job. You build , I'll cook and pour , then to end the night we can watch some movies.... Hmmm this is sounding like a Date , ok Ron don't make this weird , ok maybe make it weird LOL
