Y'all,
I've a chance to monkey with the Rotel RCD-1072 for a couple of days now that I bought from fellow Polkie haimoc. So far so good. It opens and closes like a rocket. The remote seems pretty friendly. High build-quiality is evident. Mated to the Bel Canto, it seems to be everything the NEC CD-ROM was with a remote and able to actually read every single CD I own. I think there might even be a touch more bass response. Next on the agenda is to demo the internal DAC's against the Bel Canto DAC2. Should be interesting, especially with HDCD content. Wes

Glad you like your first impressions of the RCD 1072...I have ours mated with a Parasound DAC,and to tell you the truth,I can't hear a nichols worth of difference when spinning a "good" recording or an HDCD disc.
The DAC does make some less than perfect recordings much easier to listen to...seems I own more average recordings than I do "good" ones,so the DAC is going to stay for a while.

Here's a few more comments:
I only have 2 HDCD's that I'm aware of, but on the one that I'm most familiar with, the only slight difference I could discern was incrementally more sparkle on the HDCD vs. the Bel Canto. Otherwise it was a total wash. I may give it another go this evening using both CD's just to mix it up. Plays the few CDR's I have quite nicely. The well recorded songs still seem to show quite a bit of dynamics and clarity on both the Bel Canto and the internal DAC's. Speaking of internal DAC's, this might be a lot closer shootout than I originally imagined. All I can say at this point is that I might need to spend a lot of time (weeks maybe?) with the internals then swap to the Bel Canto to really be aware of the differences. When I did this with the NEC, it was amazing. Lows and highs were at least compareable, but the Bel Canto really shines in the rich, full mids. Wes |
