XRt12 Reference Tuner

"[Listening to XM radio on the Polk XRt12] was the first riveting music experience I'd had in a while—I didn't dare touch the dial...This is the first time I've felt that satellite radio could strike the same emotional chord as CDs or high-quality MP3s."

"Lots of companies talk about quality however, so I was skeptical up until the moment I plugged it into Yamaha's CinemaStation DVX-S650 home theater for a test. I was so impressed with what I heard, I settled down for a long winter's listen."

"Like Polk says, even if you buy the XRt12 receiver, you should hang onto your CD player. Of course, you may never use it again."

"The sound quality on this tuner is amazing! When listening to the tuner using the digital output you will hear amazing clarity that you won't get from hooking up your SkyFi or Roady in your home. If you don't have a newer home A/V receiver with digital inputs, don't worry because the analog output of this tuner sounds very, very good (the XRt12 uses Burr-Brown Digital-to-Analog Converter)."

"Bottom line: I'm impressed. I was getting frustrated with XM's lack of a home receiver, but now I'm speechless. Whether this is a radio for yourself, or a gift, it's $299 well-spent."

"It [The Polk XRt12 tuner] has a feature that must have been designed with relentless music seekers like me in mind: the Memory button. If I hear something I like, all I have to do is press the XRt12's front-panel Memory button and it will retain the text scroll identifying the artist and song (10 songs total); later, I can access the Memory Recall function and get out my notepad."

"I'd dabbled with XM a while back, auditioning Sony's original car/home satellite receiver, a product whose mediocre sound quality was surpassed only by its phenomenally clunky user interface. But the Polk XRt12 was bruited as a horse of a different color.

For one thing, it wasn't a product scaled down to be slipped into a docking cradle in a dashboard or boombox—it was designed around a component-sized (17" wide) chassis and packed with a Burr-Brown DAC, a special power supply, a high-quality adjustable gain card, and a circuit topology that places the power supply, display, outputs, preamp, and tuner on discrete circuit boards in the quest for lower noise/minimized interference.

It also has something I've never seen on a satellite radio tuner: digital outs. The analog outputs sound surprisingly robust, with solid bass and timbre that were extremely natural compared to what I'd heard emanating from the Sony. Attach the XRt12 to a fancy-schmancy outboard DAC, however, such as the Musical Fidelity X-DACV3 I had on hand, and it gets even better.

"If I say that my initial experience with XM is that the sound is better than the average FM station, that's faint praise. But I think it's better than that—at least through the Polk XRt12."

"I had to write and tell you how superb your XM radio Audiophile player is. I had my XM radio plugged in through the home cradle with the analog output...it was good, but nothing compared me for how superb your unit is. I have good equipment, good cables and your unit produces CD quality music for thousands less than my CD player. Thank you for a wonderful product!"

"The XRt12 sounded better...noticeably better. Bass was deeper and tighter, the midrange seemed fuller, with more presence, and the treble was more sparkling."

"The component size, cool styling and abundant connectors of Polk Audio's tuner make it a welcome addition to any equipment stack...put the XRt12 tuner on your short list."

"Polk's home-theater units have a stellar reputation, so we weren't surprised by the XRt12's crystal-clear sound. Whether we were listening to Interpol or Ella Fitzgerald, the system delivered muscular bass and razor-sharp vocals."

"The bottom line: Polk's homebound XM radio sets a new standard for satellite radio sound quality."

"...refined listeners now have an alternative: Polk's XRt12 XM Reference Tuner is the first satellite radio that's truly audiophile-grade...the XRt12's sound was truly remarkable, with vivid transparency and a deep soundstage...the XRt12 is the best-sounding satellite radio we've tested."

"...the sound [of the Polk XRt12] is more spacious, with better imaging of powerful bass and stinging treble - far less compressed than what I have found with plug-and-play units hooked into the same stereo system."
"With the Polk XRt12, you can live that musical life from the luxury of your favorite comfy chair with the full fidelity of a true home audio component. Can there be any better excuse?"

"I’m convinced that, sometime during the last 30 years, robots took over FM radio. You have to admit that they’re consistent -- consistently bad."

"...FM has been taken over by corporate America, with the result that the independents are all but dead, and along with them most of the innovative and cutting-edge programming. By the time you hear anything coming out of your radio today, it’s been programmed, processed, and homogenized to make sure it’s just like everything else. This is no way to run a radio station. Judging by the droves of people abandoning FM as a music source, it seems a lot of you agree."

"If you love music, you want satellite radio. Period. As far as I’m concerned, this is the coolest thing since sliced bread. No, it’s way cooler than that. Really."

"Suffice it to say that the Polk XRt12 offers a number of advantages that fully justify its price and status as a dedicated tuner in your home system."

"the XRt12’s construction and electronics will squeeze every last drop of performance out of the medium that it is currently possible to squeeze. Overall, I found the sound quality excellent. While still a notch below that of CD, it was clearly superior to MP3 and FM broadcasts."

"The Polk XRt12 XM tuner is a no-brainer. A lot of equipment cycles through our house over the course of a year, but this unit has completed a one-way trip...Its sound quality is good enough to satisfy my audiophile tendencies, and the continuous voyage of musical discovery is enough to keep both of us settled into our listening chairs for hours on end. I don’t care where you live or what your musical tastes are -- the XRt12 should be on your short list to audition."

"As for sound -- the Polk is the best sounding component tuner that I’ve ever heard in my system...the Polk seems to go higher in the treble and lower in the bass -- as well as providing much better stereo separation between the speakers."

"I really enjoyed my time with the Polk XM tuner. It introduced me to XM Radio and for that I am grateful. 'Fred' has helped me to reconnect to my favorite music from the 80s and 90s and other XM stations have introduced me to new pleasures as well, in many different genres."

"The remote is simply laid out and easily understandable. It reminds me of the early days of remotes with on/off, volume and channel change, (refreshing actually considering the new universal trends)."

"In our age of MP3 acceptable sound quality, the Polk XM tuner is more than satisfying. I’ve noticed that it’s playing in our house for background music constantly, telling me we are enjoying it. The only problem is the fight for which channel."

"Radio is back! The Polk Audio XM Satellite Digital Radio Tuner definitely is heads and tails above any music service I’ve experienced. The Polk Audio XRt12 is now a permanent component in my system."

miDock Portfolio

With the explosive market growth of portable MP3 players, and the enormous popularity of the iPod, the same growth has emerged for portable speaker / docking station products. It seems like every electronics manufacturer has done their best to jump on the iPod bandwagon by coming out with some sort of iPod accessory, headset of speaker system. Some people may find the number of accessories and portable speakers mind boggling – with so many choices available, they resign themselves to just picking up the cheapest name brand iPod compatible speaker system they find at their local electronics store. But for those music listeners with more discerning taste and a desire to get the most bang-for-their-buck, the Polk Audio miDock Portfolio provides a very attractive choice for a portable powered speaker system.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the Polk Audio miDock Portfolio is that the glossy exterior finish seamlessly blends with the finish of your iPod. Looking more closely at the unit, you will see curved corner edges that are also very similar to the rounded edges found on the iPod. The product designers obviously paid close attention to aesthetics when developing the miDock, and it certainly shows in the end product.

Designed to be paired with all types of iPods, the miDock includes an array of adaptors that allow docking for all types of iPods. In case you use a MP3 player from a different manufacturer, it also includes an auxiliary 3.5mm stereo jack for use with any other type of MP3 player. With size dimensions of only 6-3/8" high, 7-7/8" wide, 4-5/8" deep and weighing in at 1.8 lbs., the miDock is truly a portable speaker system and docking station.

Out of the Box Setup

The test unit came in black finish (also available in white) and included the following:

  • miDock Portfolio speaker system
  • Protective carry bag
  • 12V power adapter with 6’ power cord
  • Adapters for the following iPod models:
    • iPod 10GB, 15GB, 20GB
    • iPod 30GB, 40GB
    • iPod mini 4GB, 6GB
    • iPod 20GB, U2 Special Edition
    • iPod with color display 20GB, 30GB, U2 Special Edition
    • iPod with color display 40GB, 60GB, 80GB
    • iPod Nano 2GB, 4GB
    • iPod with video 30GB
    • iPod with video 60GB
  • User Guide
  • Adapter Guide
  • Online registration sheet

Setup was extremely simple and involved picking the right adapter for my iPod Nano 2GB, attaching it to the bottom end of the iPod, docking the iPod into the miDock and then plugging in the AC power adapter.

On the front of the unit are the basic controls to use the miDock – power, volume up and volume down. Playback of music on the iPod is still done using the click-wheel on the iPod. After powering on the miDock, a blue LED light is activated that shows the miDock is powered on and ready for use. An added bonus is that the miDock recharges the iPod battery once it is docked. Overall, the set up was incredibly easy and took less than 5 minutes to get the miDock up and running and ready to play music.
