Achieving Big, Deep, Musical Bass

We love big bass. Huge, immense, gigantic, floor-shaking, rafter-rattling, plaster-cracking bass. We want to feel it in the air around us, and have it anchor our audio solidly in the realm of the realistic. Whether it’s dinosaur footfalls in our home theater, a towering stand-up bass in our favorite jazz cuts, or the subtle moving depth of a classical piece. Bass is our favorite kind of sound. 

But plain old big is never good enough when it comes to bass. We also love deep, musical bass. Smooth, flowing, well-blended bottom end is what we’re looking for. And the fact is; this is the most difficult kind of bass response to achieve.

A Standard Port is Just Not Good Enough for Us

RT power port illustration - beforeHow do you achieve tremendous bass response from standard loudspeaker enclosures? You use a port. See, a lot of stuff is moving around inside a loudspeaker enclosure. If you visited the inside of a working loudspeaker, you’d be shuddered and rocked by waves of deep low frequency back-sounds radiating from the rear sides of the fast-moving speaker drivers. A port, or opening, allows this energy to exit the enclosure in a whoosh of moving air, resulting in an enhancement of the speaker’s low frequency reproduction.

But this moving air creates turbulence. This turbulence usually results in boomy distortion, especially at high volume. Air turbulence at the mouth of even a small diameter port causes a lot of noise, and can result in bass output losses up to 3dB. Astonishingly, a loss of 3dB means that half the amplifier power being used for bass reproduction is wasted by air turbulence!

To overcome this tragic limitation of the standard port design, and to virtually eliminate bass stealing turbulence at the port mouth, Polk engineers designed and patented an innovation we humbly call the PowerPort.

The classic PowerPort is a specially designed cone at the mouth of the port that funnels and directs the moving air when it exits the port. The PowerPort promotes laminar (or, smooth to you and me) airflow. It uses an ingeniously compact design to mimic the properties of what would be a very long flared port opening, reducing air turbulence to near zero. No turbulence means no wasted power, which means more efficient bass response.
