The F/X500i offers an exceptional high end value in performance and sound reproduction for your mid or larger sized home theater.
The F/X500i features:
- Dynamic Balance® composite driver for wide response and low distortion
- Two Dynamic Balance Tri-Laminate tweeters on opposing baffles for clear, detailed highs and spacious surround effects
- Switchable Dipole/Bipole operation for the greatest placement flexibility
- Anti-diffraction bezel and grille systems to minimize grille-edge reflections for more open, spacious "real life" imaging
- Acoustic Resonance Control® (ARC) Port System reduces unwanted internal enclosure resonance for utterly clear midrange reproduction.
- Built-in wall bracket for easy wall mounting
- Timbre matched to other Polk speakers for seamless, lifelike imaging
- Bass response to below 80Hz assures optimum performance in discrete channel Dolby Digital (AC-3) surround systems

Surround speakers go behind you, or to the rear left and right sides of your home theater room (depending on your seating location and room layout). They envelop you in sound, especially in today's discrete multi-channel digital world. Good surround effects add to the realism of your home theater experience, and put you and your family right in the center of the action!
What is "Dipole/Bipole"?
The more "diffuse" the surround sound field, the less the listener is able to pinpoint the action, resulting in a more realistic, enveloping surround sound experience, especially when it's necessary to mount the speakers close to the listening area. For the ultimate in rear surround, choose speakers with a choice of sound field patterns, both BiPole and DiPole. Polk's F/X300i, F/X500i and F/X1000 let you choose BiPole or DiPole at the flick of a switch depending on the speaker's placement. Place them where they look best in your home theater, and then select the pattern that provides optimum sound for you.

This Polks are the greatest... they have great imaging ability. You feel like your inside the movie you're watching. I got a great deal on these through a local dealer. Mine are the white finished version. I'm running them with a Harman Kardon AVR-510 receiver 70 watt x 5, I plan to upgrade to the AVR-8000 which should really make these speakers produce. -JRW-

diffuse sound with the dipoles are great. And if you want better imaging switch to bipoles.
Weaknesses:
dipole/bipole switch could be better placed. wish it had a sub in it.
Review:
upgraded my rear speakers to this model bringing all my 9 speakers in my home theatre to polk audio. Ive checked out many models and you will never be disapointed in their speakers or there fantastic customer service. Bar none they are the best.
