The RT400 shares many technologies and features with Polk's state-of-the-art SRT System making it an affordable choice for either music listening or part of a home theater system. It contains:
Dynamic Balance midrange drivers and tweeters that produce wide, smooth response and low distortion.
Narrow cabinet front works to reduce unwanted cabinet diffraction which narrows the high frequency dispersion and reduces the ability to pin point images.
Polk's famous attention to detal doesn't stop with the tweeter, driver and cabinet. The internal crossover circuit is carefully designed to create a smooth transistion from the sounds produced by the tweeter and the midrange driver. This gives the listener an accurate, believable presentation of whatever sounds are given to it.

They have been reliable and fantastic for sound for the last 11 years.
Weaknesses:
None I can think of; I was on a tighter budget at the time of buying and remain satisfied with their performance.
Review:
I still love my RT 400 speakers after 11 years. They produce great sound for the price I paid and still compliment my home theater. I am in the process of upgrading with the additional of a blu-ray player and looking at the PSW505 subwoofer after my prior one from a competitor recently stopped working. I also want to upgrade to a Polk center speaker because I have continued to be so impressed by the quality and longevity of these RT 400 speakers. Great product!

Impressive bass, specially when playing music.
Weaknesses:
When used with Dolby Digital surround sources, the bass can get a bit muddy.
Review:
I bought a pair of RT-400 as the front pair for my digital surround system. They perform extremely well for their price, with a amazingly deep bass, a wide range for midranges, and clear highs. When compared side by side, they outperformed in every single aspect similar products by other brands. I actually had the chance to compared them side to side with a pair of Infinity Reference 2000.4 tower speakers, and I have to say my Polk RT-400 blew them away. No contest in the bass department. Overall, I'm one happy customer. I will buy Polk again whenever I need to upgrade my system.

Bass response, overall SQ, excellent imaging and soundstage.
Weaknesses:
They are vinyl covered MDF and not the greatest build quality. But one can overlook this because of the way they sound.
Review:
This is a very impressive small 2 way floorstander and a very versitile speaker. I've used them in a 2 channel system and as the fronts in a Home Theater system and they perform very well in either set-up. It has excellent bass response and a very smooth tweeter. They image well and seem to disappear in a two channel set-up. That is one of the advantages of a two way speaker. The provide a fairly wide soundstage. The RT400 is one of my favorite Polk speakers and I will probably always have a pair in my "collection" of Polk Speakers.

After the SRS1C's, well, little could compare with them, but a move to much smaller quarters made them unrealistic and was just a waste of potential so I left them behind lived a horrid 4 year period without any Polks in my life. These RT400's in my case were a steal, and have preformed flawlessly now for over ten years. As others have said, the bass response is excellent, and strongest if you place them in corners, and that same respone can be moderated to taste by pulling the speakers further away from the walls. In city living that means full bass is there when the neighbors are absent, and can be easily and flatly reduced with a simple shift of the speakers. I love both my other current pairs of Polks just as much. The Atrium's have brought an entire new dimension to the RV experience. I've been afforded the chance to really open them up in an outdoor setting and they produce a quality sound hundreds of feet away.
Weaknesses:
They are rare enough that pairs never seem to appear on EBay and I'd actually like to grab a second pair to have around for replacement parts if ever needed. Otherwise their only weakness is to Polk's detriment, they are good enough to last the rest of my natural life.
Review:
I for a pair on closeout in San Francisco during the summer of 1999. They had been on the floor, had a couple of scuffs on the outside. But they had the boxes and shipping materials so I was happy to take them. Polk Speaker history for me includes SRS1C, SRS2B, Monitor 4.5, Monitor Jr. and Atrium45 for the camper.
