Polk's trademark open,boxless sound.
I upgraded these to"i"status by changing the tweeter to the newer model. The only difference between the 55 and 55i is the tweeter and blue colored woofers according to Polk(see my review of the 55i)I LOVE these!!

Build quality, huge sound stage and dynamics, do their job well for movies.
Tweeter can be bright at times.
After lusting after these for years, I finally got my hands on a pair. I can say without a doubt that they live up to their reputation. In fact, they are probably in the top five of my all-time favorite speakers. They throw a huge sound stage that completely bellies their size. Dynamics are very impressive as well. The only fault(if it can be called that) is that the tweeter can be a bit bright at times. But all in all, the RT55 is an incredible speaker. I've bought and sold dozens of speakers since I got into this hobby. These RT55's are here to stay.

"...the RT55s are a lot of fun to listen to... very spacious and airy, and provide a lot of 'bang for the buck."
Vacuum Tube Valley, Issue 12, Summer 1999
"Our panel agreed they sounded big, dynamic, and smooth...They possesed good resolution and a sense of coherency; at the same time they were very smooth and wl-behaved... Polk Audio's RT55 are a great value... we liked the level of sonic refinement provided by the RT55s at this price point."
