Soundly based on dynamic balance.
Consisting of one floor-standing and three bookshelf models, the S series offers upcompromised performance with unmatched value. The way tweeters and drivers are matched, the way the crossovers are designed, the way the cabinet mechanics are "voiced" to the components, the way the custom-made screws hold it in place, serve to make the S series a great choice for any indoor home loudspeaker application.
The S4 employs the new SL5000 Dynamic Balance 1" drive unit in a vented cabinet. The smallest bookshelf model in the S series, the S4 offers big performance. Julian Hirsch, writing for Stereo Review, said: "The S4's measured performance was exceptional, especially for its size and price. In particular, its frequency response over most of the audio range was among the flattest we have ever measured from a speaker."

Great hi and midrange for the price, and have lasted forever.
Weaknesses:
Not much bass, but what can you expect from bookshelf speakers.
Review:
I have had these for years, and am currently using them for surround speakers with a PSW150 and R30's for fronts. They have good clarity, and superb midrange that just about every other polk seems to. not much bass, but for surrounds or a second system they still work great.

Imaging, efficiency (not many watts needed for these speakers to rock you hard), smoothness, value, size (about the size of a shoebox).
Weaknesses:
Not much power in the low bass (the notes that you feel), but this is easily remedied with a subwoofer.
Review:
I gave them a "5" because they are such an extraordinary value. I am sure that there are better-sounding speakers but they'd cost a lot more. The imaging is extraordinary. The mids and uppers are smoooth - the highs ring when they should ring, instead of hissing and sizzling.

91dB sensitivity = plays quite loud enough on my 14watt class T power amp (.01%-.003% THD) and ipod (the weakest link in the audio chain). Sounds better than any of my hifi headphones balanced sound; decent bass with excellent mids and highs. I wish I had objective measurements but my impression is that these sound accurate. May be inexpensive to acquire ~50$ pair? These will work as nearfields as well. good monitors for a small room.
Weaknesses:
it can't do the impossible, needs a sub to shake the room. Maybe hard to find on the market
Review:
I have these set up in a casual compact listening set up as a bedroom system 5" apart; 1" from the back wall and 2.5" from corners. Elevated to ear level the spot where the woofer meets the tweeter using a dresser as a stand with the baffles on the front edge, may try monitor isolation pads and a 6 degree tilt. Good imaging from my position 8-10" back. Had them on carpeted floor previously with a consumer name brand stereo (.3% THD) that had a lot of weird surround sound filtering in the circuit...not a good combo made these seem super bass heavy. The setup listed above by contrast produced balanced results

Imagery! especially with time corrected cables and Yamaha amplification.
Weaknesses:
Bass, but not weak by much.
Review:
I have had my S4 speakers since the early 90s and have kept them in favor of more expensive speakers.
