The XRT is almost all you could expect from a tuner - bass power and mid-range detail and a well-developed soundstage.
Weaknesses:
It would be great if it had AM/FM. That there is no "memory" button on the remote is disappointing.
Review:
I'm sorry but I don't get the reviews from Paul and Cliff. Are they reviewing the XRT12 or Satellite Radio? Satellite Radio is not Polk's fault. XM and Sirius are never going to sound as good as a CD or even a strong FM signal on good gear. The satellite signal is compressed, like MP3. If amazing sonic performance is what you're expecting from XM then don't subscribe. XM is about the programming - period. It's about hearing music you forgot about and discovering music you were never aware of. It's like having 200 independent FM stations back when local DJs used to hand pick music and know something about it. In the days before the commercial takover and the endless repetition of sameness. XM is about sitting in the driveway until the set finishes. As for Polk's XRT12. It's the best I've heard at delivering the XM signal. It takes a signal that is mildly annoying when coming from my SkyFi and makes it more than acceptable. The XRT12 makes XM radio a respectable listening alternative for a good home hi-fi system. As soon as I opened the box, I could tell by the weight that I had a serious piece of audio gear. When I turned it on, I knew I had a keeper. The XRT delivers the imaging, the bass and detail that suprised me after listening to the SkyFi for so long! The SkyFi is back in the car where it will forever stay.

Review:
After having XM in my semi truck for a couple of years. I knew I had to have XM at home too. But I tried my Delphi unit at home with a home cradle. It did`nt sound that great. So, being a big fan of Polk speakers. I decided to try the XRt12. The tuner is great! I cannot say that for XM. I wish that some of the channels were not so compressed. I would be happy with less channels and less compression. After all, is it not great sound that XM was trying to sell XM on in the first place! Yes, a few stations such as the clasical music are much less compressed. But what about some of the top listened to channels? Anyway, back to the tuner review. I am able to use the optical output to get the best possible sound. Boy, it sure does make XM sound its best! They offer a couple of channels in HD now, and even though the Polk does not have the surround sound capability. It does extremely well at the stereo level.

As far as sound is concerned it's an exceptional piece. Programming stations is relatively easy after you figure it out for yourself. I thought the directions were very weak. Fast & easy hookup. I'm sure as time goes on the display will become more advanced. It's fairly basic. XM at home in high style...buy one!

Review:
The Polk XRt12 XM tuner takes XM satellite radio to a whole new level. After using numerous XM radios from Sony and Delphi, the XRt was a breath of fresh air. Audiophile features abound on this tuner; digital out, rca out, solid build construction, and the ability to project the display on your television are highlights. The adjustable blue display is also very cool; styling of the unit in general is sleek/modern. The bass is well controlled and deep reaching. Midrange is glorious, and treble is clear and fairly extended. Earlier XM tuners had rolled-off high frequencies, but the Polk XRt has improved high-end extension. Gone also is the issue with low input; the XRt has a much higher line-level input that matches your average components. Fidelity of the unit seems to fall between fine FM and compact disc playback, realizing that the tuner is limited to what XM transmits. Background noise is far better than FM, but not quite as good as CD. The Polk XRt12 is the only way to listen to XM satellite radio in my opinion....enjoy!

Review:
So far there is not much to compare this unit to other than the portable Delphi and similar units, unless you start talking high-end AM/FM Tuners. I received the Polk unit as a gift and overall am very happy with it. Sonically it is a major improvement over the Delphi unit and I am proud to include it in my Thiel/Classe/Musical Fidelity system. Only two complaints: the compression and fidelity from station to station is inconsistant, but that is likely the fault of XM, not Polk. The other issue for me would be if you choose to want to use the unit without remote, because you are close to it, have too many remotes or whatever, it is tedious to switch stations and you cannot simply punch in a number as you can on the remote. I also wish the viewing window was larger than the Delphi, or at least in the Delphi orange color versus the challenging blue. I am enjoying the Polk piece immensely however, and given the price, believe it to be a value. I look forward to baseball season to catch all my favorite teams on XM at home. Great sound quality. Option to hook up via analog or digital outputs. Everything needed included in the box.
Weaknesses:
The display. I find that the bright blue on black background is nearly impossible to read, unless I am a couple of feet from the tuner.
Review:
The Polk replaced a plug and play unit I had been using for a couple of years. I am using the analog output of the Polk to connect to my tuner. The first thing I noticed was how much more three-dimensional the sound stage was. I even did a side-by-side comparison with the previous tuner. The Polk had noticeably better sound quality. I like the remote better, as it's a good size. I never much liked "credit card" sized remotes, as they can get lost to easily.

Black and White video feed showing Artist and Song Title. In 2005, it "should" have been in color...at the very least White letters on a Blue background.
Review:
The XRt12 XM digital receiver was a hit the moment it left its box! Until your hear XM through true optical connections or with the analog RCA jacks, using Polk's state-of-the art electronics, you have not yet experienced the fidelity of XM Satellite Radio!! It was the hit of the holiday season at my house! Of course, the video feed to the television is also kewl feature, showing artist and song title. If you can, buy one you will NOT be dissapointed! Excellent sound quality. Integrates well with a home sound system.
Weaknesses:
I wish the display had more contrast however, since this information can be ported to a TV monitor this is a minor shortcoming.
Review:
I purchased the Polk tuner a few weeks ago after borrowing a friend's Delphi XM car unit. I liked the XM programming but wanted a tuner to work with my home system comprised of a McIntosh preamp and amplifier with electrostatic speakers. The sound quality of the Delphi unit was good but the Polk tuner has a feeling of space and depth in the music not present in the car unit. This is a great product!

What good does it do to have a remote when you have to get so close to an XM receiver to read those tiny screens that you could just as easily use your hand. That's assuming that you don't have all your presets memorized. Well, I'm a dedicated surfer. Now there's no problem at all using the very functional and man sized remote because now (I) can read the channel and song information on a 62inch DLP. And did I say Optical Audio??? Yeah..
Weaknesses:
No memory button on the remote would be the most obvious "weakness". I rarely use that feature but when I do I'd like it to be handy so I don't have to leap my large oak coffee table in a single bound. Additionally, as long as we have the graphics then let's get a bit funky and entertaining. Artist album covers may not be an option but Polk could probably easily outdo Windows Media Player for some kewl incorporated graphics while it's using my wide screen display for simple text information on the channel and song.
Review:
Don't let my review fool you just because I left off one star. This unit is ready willing and able to go to 5.1 but until XM makes that happen then that is a part of the capability of this unit that is not being tested. Therefore, I've reserved that extra star for the future.

Easy of use--similar operatational attributes and design to the XM SkyFi unit. Attractive component that fits perfectly (size, design, and color) with the other components in my audio rack. Audio is superior to the hand-held, docked XM SkyFi unit.
Weaknesses:
The Polk XRt12 does not support infrared, remote control use--I cannot use the remote control of the unit through the infrared control plates of my whole-house system. I was told Polk is working on a translator to allow infrared to work, but have not seen or heard of a solution yet.
Review:
For those desiring an alternative to terristrial radio in the home, the Polk XRt12 provides an outstanding solution, with an easy-to-use, attractive, component. The unit's audio is superior to the XM SkyFi unit (which I had connected to my home system). I have the unit connected to a whole house system, and it has virtually been operating since I bought it in November 2004.

Review:
The tuner sounds fantastic! I was very pleased when I found the XRt in the XM Radio weekly bulletin. Jumped right on that! Previously, I had been listening to my Sony, via 12 foot audio cables. Obviously, the Polk XRt-12, feeding into my receiver/amp via a digital coax cable is much better (no hum). I am slightly hampered by my speakers, which is a rather "inexpensive" set of JBLs. Sorry. I did have a large set of Polk Audio (just left and right)speakers, but gave them to my son due to my space limitations.

Great sound and looks. Variety of outputs and ability to link to a whole house system.
Weaknesses:
No pause or repeat. Lenght of antenna cord too short and only size extension is 50 feet.
Review:
XM has become our primary audio source. Much easier than finding that certain CD and better than FM. Before getting the XRt12 we used a Roady in the house. This looks much nicer and has better sound plus the Roady stays in the car where it belongs. The choice of two digitial and an analog output gives good flexibilty. The TV output makes finding out who's on easy but the names should scroll to give complete artist/song title when they are long. The lenght of the antenna cord will require the use of an extension if a window isn't nearby and/or the building interferes with reception. What I would like to see added to this unit the ability to pause or go back and replay a song. The remote has a nice feel in the hand and is the easiest way to operate the unit. Our remote died after a few months but a new one was sent with no questions and no charge. Great customer service. It's nice to see a company back it's products in this manner. I bought this unit because of my experience with Polk speakers and feel it delivers the same great quality.

Review:
An awsome unit! Finally somebody realized that a portable unit doesn't belong with anyone's home audio system! The XRt12 looks great, and took only a couple of minutes to hook up using the optical output and the supplied antenna(which can be placed totally out of sight), and set up is a breeze. The audio quality is pure digital, crisp and clean. The Polk XRt12 Refrence Tuner will be the benchmark of all who follow.

I'm very pleased with the overall performance, ease of use and handsome design of my Polk XM Radio Tuner. I was looking for something of home audio quality with discreet components and a real power supply, rather than the "all on one chip" stuff you see in department stores.

Can read the screen acrose the room. Styling and sound quality are superb. Very flexible -- nearly any stereo set-up can accomodate the XRt 12.
Weaknesses:
The remote seems to be rather cheaply made and I fear that in time numbers will wear off the frequently used keys.
Review:
The XRt 12 replaced a Sony XM tuner which I had also been using in the car. The XRt 12is far superior -- brighter, clearer, with great mid-range presence and solid bass. It's features are well thought out and the DAC yields a sound quality which is Soooo close to CD quality. I recently purchased a new amp and discovered the XRt 12 was even cleaner than I had imagined.

Decent sound without all the cradles, adaptors, etc. of car-to-home units. Antennae is absolutely extraordinary at pulling in the XM signal from challenging locations.
Weaknesses:
Display color was rejected by Sony and should have been by Polk.
Review:
The XRt12 succeeded in eliminating the hassles of cradles and the additional wiring of portable home units. It is certainly on par with these units in terms of audio quality. I was hoping for a beter sonic resolution, but here's where the benefit of having both coaxial and optical digital outputs comes into play. I route the digital signal to my Quad CD player and achieve more musical sounding playback... for me. The remote serves little purpose except for turning the unit off across the room. Why? Because, unfortunately, Polk decided to use the blue on blue display which was rejected by us early users of the Sony DRM-XM1 units. It's difficult to view under any conditions unless you're directly in front of the unit, at eye level, and less than five feet away. Sony moved to a blue on white display in their next generation and the results were superior. Could someone please look into a pop-up 5" LCD screen located on top of the unit? I accept the visual strain in the car, but in the home I expect to be able to see much more clearly. Also, the silver bar that acts as the on/off switch is also a bit confusing. If you try to toggle the silver bars next to the display you'll achieve nothing as the controls are now up/down buttons. One style would have been easier. Yes, I do have a lot of little gripes about this model, but kudos for Matthew Polk for having the courage to bring the first real XM home unit to market. I'm sure that our feedback will be heard and acted upon for the next generation. And XM is too great a medium to be ignored.

Best product out there. Not only is it sleek looking it also has execptional quality (build as well as sound). Lot of bang for the buck. The sound is top rate. If any of you are concerned about that forget about any objections you may have. All buttons and paddle switches are of excellent quality. The display is easy to read too. Don't think about buying this for too long as you will be missing out on the enjoyment of xmradio in true high fidelity as you ponder a decision.

For once, the sales pitch matched the receiver. My wife has used XM in her store just up the street and I've been jealous of the great material available on XM. However, I'm a snob when it comes to audio equipment and I wanted clean sound too! The XRt12 is connected to my Sony receiver through a fiber switch and it is everything that I would want. The main strengths include a width that is the same as other audio components AND two digital outputs.
Weaknesses:
The main weakness that I noticed is a display that is too small to show long names of artists and songs. The video display on the TV could be beefed up to be attractive instead of looking like the screen on an old DOS computer.
Review:
Nice looking unit that fits nicely with the other audio and home theater components. Functionality is very good except that there is not enough room in the little display to show full titles for some songs. The digital outputs are the major plus for this unit--I have it connected via Toslink to a McIntosh MX134 pre/pro. Also, the submenus are excellent for adjusting the supplied antenna.

I have owned (and still do) the analog Delphi version and there is quite a difference in sound quality needless to say(to A-B them was very interesting).....The XRt12's sound quality surpasses by two stars...Deeper bass, better S/N ratio and separation are assets of this tuner...Using it's digital audio outs is the key.....

Extremely easy to set-up. The screen of the unit is not big but... giving you the ability to connect to your TV takes care of that issue. I was quickly up and running and the sound is superb! It is wonderful to finally have a XM radio receiver that has an audio preamplifier that will match the audio levels and frequency response of the rest of the components in my system. Great product. Performs as advertised. With the right coax adapters (from Pasternak Enterprises in Irvine, CA), I was able to simplify the installation by using one of the extra and unused coax cables that I had installed for my DirecTV system to connect from the XRt12 to the roof and then connect to the supplied antenna. Works great.

As a 15+ year customer of Polk Audio and a 2+ year customer of XM radio, I was pleasantly surprised to hear of the marriage of a great audio speaker manufacturer with digital audio's answer to small dish satellite tv. The RXt12 reference tuner provides the audio clarity the digital format deserves. I am a pleased owner of two of these tuners using one at home and one at my office. My overall listening experience at both is significantly enhanced.

Review:
At a glance the front panel of the Polk XM tuner is very handsome,I have not seen ANY home or car (with home kit) tuner I would consider to stack up with my home audio until this elegant thing came along. Hook up was a breeze, but the antenna is very fussy on aiming. Once sounds started pouring out of this box (via optical output) I was convinced I did not purchase the Polk just for good looks. Smooth, warm, plenty of depth and sound stage were all present where my older car-home kit tuner fell flat on it's face in comparison. Thanks to the people at Polk that are STILL in tune (!)with audiophiles needs.

Better sound and the digital coax "out" is a substantial benefit...
Weaknesses:
The unit is still a bit flimsy compared to regular audiophile standards; and unless it is weighted down a bit, tends to move when you touch any of the front panel controls. Also, it would be nice to have some expanded menu controls and station storage over and above what is offered on the other smaller units. For this price you deserve a bit more....
Review:
If you are a big XM fan, as I am; and you like to listen through your audio system rather than just in the car, this unit is a great upgrade from the portable units we have been forced to listen to up until this point in time. A MUCH improved analog converter gives you a a bit better everything to listen to...

The XRt12 is a welcome addition to my audio system. In head to head comparisons with music channels on satellite TV as well as various CDs and FM radio, the Polk clearly sounds better than all but my CD player. This unit is well engineered, with a DAC that appears to be well suited to the signal, and isolated components. The controls are intuitive and easy to use.
Weaknesses:
XM broadcasting is what it is: a compressed digital signal. The fidelity is noticelably less than from a CD played thorugh the same system. Aesthetically, the blue panel and blue power light are keyed to the latest fashion in computer and computer accessory design. This look fits less well with traditional high end audio components.
Review:
We have had the XRt12 for about 3 months, and even since the novelty of XM broadcasting has worn off, it remains the most listened to device on our component system.

Review:
This tuner has a very nice look to it; it works very well for its intended purpose & sounds very good with just average equipment (like mine). It has 20 pre-sets, a mute button, a jump button which enables you to go back & forth between your last two stations you were listening to & the ability to display relevent information on your tv screen. It does NOT have volume control on the included remote which forces you to use 2 remotes at the same time to achieve all of the normal use functions; it does NOT have a memory button on the remote but does on the tuner itself; It does NOT have the tune select feature that some XM equipment has; the display on the tuner itself is nearly impossible to see beyond approx 8 feet. Overall this is a nice addition to our home theater set-up but with a few adjustments/additional features it COULD have been superb!!

Great sound. Fast station changes. Very logical remote control. Polk is a speaker company that's proving they understand electronics, too.
Weaknesses:
The remote works perfectly from straight on, but it's weak at more than 30 degrees off to the side. Also, a silver front panel as an option would be nice.
Review:
The XRt12 is well designed, solidly built, and sounds great. The sound isn't quite as good as a well-recorded CD or SACD, but it's much better than Internet radio or MP3, and as good as a strong local FM station. Or more like 60 strong FM stations ... all with inspired programming and no ads. If you like satellite radio in your car, you'll like it even more at home where you can play it through a good amp and big speakers. Polk has a hot product here.

I recall the moment when I played my first CD and heard a favorite symphony with all the precision and detail that medium can deliver. It renewed my love of symphonic music and eager to hear more. Years later, the Polk XRT12 XM Reference Tuner has reminded me again just how great, truly great music can sound. Radio has taken a similar step as recored music did from LP's to CD's with XM: beyond FM in sound quality AND without interruptions! My stero system and the Polk Tuner seemed to be made for each other. If you love music, I recommend you add this to your home system and fall in love all over again - musically speaking.

This new xm receiver replaced a first generation sony xm receiver which is hooked up to a whole house audio system. The biggest problem with the sony was the weak line out level. Any time I would switch from xm to another component, I had to adjust the volume down at the main av amp and the pre-out amp for the rest of the house speakers. The new Polk xrt12 has great line out level power to eliminate this problem. The quality of the music is much better as well. I am using the digital out for my theater and analog for the rest of the house. I think this is a great product, you will not be disappointed.

Review:
In the summer of 2003, I subscribed to XM radio to provide an alternative source of entertainment in my car for a driving vacation. I was greatly impressed with the programming that XM radio offered and regularly listened to the unit at home over my stereo system. Although the sound was adequate for my car, it lacked the rich high fidelity that one expects of a home stereo. When I learned of the WRt12, I quickly purchased the unit. With a digital audio connection the sound is exceptional and has become one of my favorite components in my system. It has quickly become one of the most commonly used options for the daily listening of music and has made listening to FM radio stations obsolete. There is always an appropriate selection of music for any occasion. The ability to see the information on music selections on my television is also a nice feature and allows me to make station selections from the opposite end of my living room. This unit is clearly the best way to get the most out of your XM radio.

Review:
This could easily be the greatest XM product to date. I really like the bigger remote, as the small one of the SkiFi did not work past about 10 feet. Absolutely no distortion, where my SkiFi with boombox tended to have a high-pitched hum. Using optical out, and a Harman Kardon AVR-230 receiver, and of course Polk Audio Speakers, it gives the truest sound I have ever heard. I was hard pressed to hear the difference between this and CD. I especially love the fact that it also includes standard RCA outputs for analog audio. Don't be fooled by this analog term, since the analog quality puts the SkiFi to shame, although I never thought much about the SkiFi until I bought this new unit. I use the RCA outs, with an EDIROL USB audio device to capture audio to my laptop using Windows Media Encoder 9 (free). It uses WMA files that I can listen to later, or even edit out specific songs. 8 hours of solid recording takes only 230 MB at CD quality, and only takes 4% CPU power to encode in realtime. I am by no means an expert, but am more than average in my audio experience. So be prepared when XM unleashes 5.1 in their broadcasting repertoire. Coupled with my Monitor 50's, CS1 center, and Monitor 30's surround, and a Velodyne Sub, powered by a HK AVR 230 receiver, I am greatly impressed.

This includes a Monitor70, CS1, PSW10 Sub, etc. I even got Monstor XP cable & gold banana plugs, bi-wiring. The only problem is that on overcast days the reception is hissy. Maybe Polk can improve on the antenna (provide a mini-dish perhaps?). In any case this is one fantastic piece of high-end audio.

Review:
I recently switched from Sirius. The digital sound from the Polk unit is a big improvement. The antenna provides much better signal strength. The blue display is not readable. However I use the TV as the display which works fine. The remote makes it easy to move between channels. Channel delete gets rid of all the stations I don't want to hear. I have one major gripe. Only the first 16 digits of the artist and song title are displayed. XMU, Unsigned, Hear Music and XM Cafe play a lot of artists and songs I haven't heard of before. I end up having to open up the XM online player to get the rest of the name. Otherwise the XRt12 is a major step in the right direction.

Line level adjustment doesn't seem to do anything.
Review:
This is a great unit and does exactly what it's supposed to do. I had a Delphi home unit and the Polk blows that away for sound quality. I use the optical output to conect to a local amp and the analog connection to connect to my home system. BTW, ignore all the complaints about the 16 character display limit -- that's an XM limitation, not the Polk receiver. And it's 16 characters for the title and 16 for the artist.
Polk Response:
We are glad to hear you're enjoying your tuner. Thought you'd like to know that the Line Level adjustment is only active when using the analog outputs. Output is fixed when using either digital output.

Review:
In 2001, I couldn't wait for XM to become available, and started out with a sony unit as soon as it went on sale. From day one, though, I was disappointed with the sound quality and chalked it up to high compression thinking there was a technological limitation. After listening to this, I realize XM is cheating us. Why aren't the portables capable of crisp, clear sound??? Maybe someone at Polk will answer?? Please?? Just curious, one shouldn't have to pay (269 at fry's)to experience great sound that obviously XM is capable of transmitting...

Weaknesses:
none for the unit, just a weak source of musical information. Reverb and presence and brightness are non-existent. Think of a bad MP3, and no matter what receiver you play it through and regardless of digital or analog processing it won't sound any better.
Review:
I honestly think some of these reviews were fabricated. This 'satellite radio' was no better sounding than a Delphi. Based on the reviews I thought this was going to be 'the one'...NOT! The source is to blame. XM crams all 200 stations into limited bandwidth, the result...music that sounds like an MP3 sampled at 64 kbps, end of story! Can't blame Polk, but garbage in garbage out, optical or not, there's no audible difference b/w RCA and optical out on this unit cause the source (XM's squashed frequencies) is crap. Don't buy into the reviews. The best optical music I know thats truly night and day difference b/w RCA and optical has been DirectTV/Hughes box/optical out...now there's incredible sound! I'm extremely dissappointed and frankly, pissed of after buying into these reviews, thinking that possibly there was some sound information that was being lost to RCA outputs, but optical doesn't make squat difference. Believe me!

Sleek Look. Video output a plus (but a little poor).
Weaknesses:
Remote IR codes have toggle bits making programming into control systems a pain. Display too dim - hard to see.
Review:
Probably one of the nicer XM receivers I've seen. Very sleek look (although the display is hard to read). Sound quality is above average for XM, and the unit is pretty easy to use. For control systems trying to control via IR - be aware this unit uses a toggle bit making programming a little more challenging. However, there is an RS232 port if you have the capability to go that route.
Polk Response:
This issue only relates to using the tuner in a distributed audio system with programmable remotes and keypads. If your tuner is in a simple audio system, this issue does not affect you at all. If your unit has a serial number above 40000, your unit will not have these issues at all. For those customers and custom installers with any RS232 or IR control problems, there is a software download that corrects these sorts of issues. Anyone wanting information about control code software or other functionality issues in distributed audio systems should contact Polk customer service at (800)377-7655 or email polkcs@polkaudio.com.

Sound quality seems to make the most of XM signal. The antenna is much better than I expected even considering I have it inside and not directly by a window.
Weaknesses:
Display is tough to see/read in certain situations.
Review:
Overall I'm realling liking it. It sounds great except for channels that seem to have more restricted bandwidth. It's still not CD quality, but it definately does a great job with the material (XM isn't CD quality regardless what anyone says). Still, the sound comes out sounding much better than I expected. The only problem I've had is that the digital outputs don't seem to do anything. I tried both coax and optical without any luck. I know it's not my receiver since I tried it in digital inputs that I had a DVD player and Xbox plugged in to. Both of those components work fine, but plugging in the Polk results in no sound. So far can't find any options I'm missing on the device so maybe it's a manufacturing defect. I'll need to either call for support or check with where I bought it when I get a chance. With that said, I'm not sure that digital output would sound any better since the internal components on this xm tuner might be better than my receiver that it's plugged in to so good analog cables are probably my better option.
Polk Response:
Contact Polk Customer service at 800-377-7655 or email polkcs@polkaudio.com to diagnose the digital output issue.

Weaknesses:
Annoying blue backlight on power button (when turned off) can't be disabled, up/down buttons work opposite.
Review:
For a home system this is definately the unit to have. After using several receivers designed for a car this one just works better- everything from its design to the multiple outputs make connecting the system easy, regardless of what system it is feeding. Unfortunately, this is clearly Polk's first try at a consumer product, and several annoyances quickly become apparent. Most annoying is the scroll buttons on the unit funtion backwards (pushing "up" scrolls down), also frustrating is the backlit power button.

Review:
I have had the Polk XRt12 tuner since it came out last year. I feel sorry for those who cannot hear the difference between this and the Roady 2 or other portable XM receivers. When connected via digital cable to my Onkyo TX-NR901 and Polk RM6900 series speakers the sound quality is crystal clear. You can hear the high end of the piano, symbols, high hats, voices, guitars and the bass lines so clearly. You know it's sharp when you can hear a guitarist sliding his/her fingers across the strings on the neck of the guitar. It is so simple to install too, with plenty of options for audio out. I like the video output to the TV as well as the many options of the screen on the unit (scrolling, still, etc.) Issues I may have with the cut off names and songs is NOT the tuner's problem, but indeed XM radio's limitation (for space considerations, I would imagine). I love listening to XM (Deep Tracks is my favorite - Progressive Rock - just like the late 60's) on this unit. My wife listens to her music, and my 15 year old daughter listens to her "20 on 20" - when we are not home thank goodness. :-) We all have noticed and mentioned to each other the signifant difference between this and FM and between this and the Roady 2 I used to use in the home. As a side note: My daughter loves the "soft-touch" to turn the unit on and off. She used to run to push the On/Off button just because she loves to just "tap" it ever so lightly. OK, not a real good reason to purchase this unit. :-) Finally, I am hoping this unit will be compatible with the new 5.1 surround sound that XM just announced they are going to have on a few stations 24/7 in March of 2006. If so, like WOW!!! :-)

Hands down great sound, XM is already good, this product just makes all that much better!
Weaknesses:
Minor annoyances with controls and buttons, really nothing negative (unless 5.1 surround is important to you!)
Review:
Simple to use, Simple to install, much better quality using digital Coax/Optical than standard XM units over analog RCA. Although the unit does support digital Coax/Optical it is NOT compatible with the new XM HD Surround channels schdueled to debut in March 2006 (confirmed today via Tech Support and Product Engineering). So if you are expecting to be ready for 5.1 with the purchase of this product you will not be.

Love the presets. Love the compatiblity with my sound system.
Weaknesses:
Difficult to view the display, but that's nit-picking.

This review is for the XRT12 not the XM service itself. Unfortunately, a few mental midgets here felt compelled to analyze the XM service and/or the quality of programming in their reviews. This section is to review the XRT12!! The tuner is great, and the sound quality is wonderful. Of course, a lot will have to do with your signal strength (see comment about mental midgets above).

Review:
I bought a Delphi SkyFi shortly after they came out and was very happy with it until a few weeks ago when DirecTV switched from Music Choice to XM channels. The sound from my Delphi immediately seemed flat and didn't seem to travel through my surround system like the sound from my DirecTV did. Problem is, DirecTV doesn't offer all XM channels. So, for quite a few weeks, I fretted and worried and tried to decide if I wanted to bite the bullet and replace my Delphi with the Polk unit. I made the decision last week and was VERY sorry that I hadn't purchased the Polk weeks ago. I had the unit up and running in less than 10 minutes. Maybe even less than 5 minutes. The sound is AWESOME. Surpasses the sound coming out of my DirecTV on the same channels. Some have complained about the small display screen on the unit, but I found the OSD to my tv is very adequate. The only problem I have is with the remote. While it is bigger than the remote for the SkyFi, it isn't quite as well thought out. I miss the up and down buttons that are on my SkyFi remote. BUTTTTT........quite by accident, I learned that the Polk accepts signals from my SkyFi remote rather well, EVEN THE UP AND DOWN CHANNEL BUTTONS. So, for those who really value this feature and are upgrading. They may want to keep the Delphi remote. Or even go out and buy one, since, I think they do sell remotes separately. I am very pleased with this unit. I recommend it highly for use through a home stereo or home surround system.

Great Audio. Integrates well with other components. Video Output capability.
Weaknesses:
Video output Scrolling is annoying.
Review:
A great sounding product that is simple to setup and use. Specifically strong is the ability to send the XM Display info through the Video Output. I purchased a small display unit specifically to dedicate to this function. Unfortunately, Polk chose to scroll this display and therefore the "full" information is not always on display. At minimum, this would have been nice to be able to have the ability to override the scrolling feature.

Audio quality excellent if properly hooked up to quality amp or receiver and speakers. Polk after market service is the best.
Weaknesses:
Inability to support XM HD Surround/Dolby 5.1. One of the reasons I purchased the Polk.
Review:
Since I have no business connection with either Polk or XM, this review is NOT fabricated as suggested by some reviews. Having said that, it is my opinion that the strengths of this receiver far outweigh the inconveniences of the weaknesses outlined in the reviews here concerning issues with the remote and displays. I believe Polk designed a scrolling outboard video display to serve as a screensaver exactly for the same reason why computers support a screensaver. Dishnetwork does the same with their music channels including Sirius. My Polk XM is hooked up using an optical audio output through a Sony home theater receiver supporting Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS. Using a Polk and Velodyne subwoofer, Polk and B & W satellite speakers, and a Boston center channel (quite a hybrid collection, hey?), I never get tired of the outstanding sonics of this setup! Bass, midrange, and treble is real, very well balanced, and exudes a well integrated audio experience! The Sony receiver offers several matrixed surround options in addition to the digital Dolby/DTS. Since XM went HD on Fine Tuning (my favorite channel) and XM Pops, I have noticed more surround effects on these two channels albeit not even close to what a XM HD ready receiver would do. Now here's a cardinal sin and a side note: I sometimes use the FM modulator of a Delphi Roady to play XM through a Magnum DynaLab 101A analog FM tuner. That rivals the Polk for sonics! I had to add that personal eccentricity of mine. Finally, for service Polk is impressive. A few months after getting my first Polk, a freak power surge fried it. I called Polk, and within less than a week Polk replaced it free of charge and no questions asked. This unit has been working great. Overall, I love what I am hearing from music to news/talk channels. I would give the Polk the higest rating, but I chose to subtract a point solely for the fact that the reference tuner won't support XM HD.

digital outputs, large brite display, looks great in a rack with other components (unlike other satalite tuners)
Weaknesses:
audio output still isn't as good as cd's
Review:
i've now been using the XRt12 for 2 years with a harmon/kardon avr535 7.1 reciever (hooked up using optical cable of course), polk front towers, center, sides, rears, and sub. sounds wonderful! not quite as good as the cd's, but the amount of music and other programs at the touch of the remote makes up for that. it looks seamless in the rack with the other components aswell. nice job. now if only XM could get the signal stronger the sound quality would really be as good as cd's.

No unexpected weaknesses. Next generation should be even better.
Review:
Overall very satisfied with the content of XM radio and delivery to my home audio system by the Polk tuner. I've been involved in high-end retail audio for many years. I know that satellite format is not as good sounding as CD or vinyl but variety makes up for everything, and sound quality is very acceptable. If you truly like music and need an alternate source then XM is worth it. The Polk receiver kicks the quality up a notch and is a great addition to a home audio system.

Fair Price. Nice build quality.
Weaknesses:
Small Display Zero feature set. No balanced output. No headphone output or volume control No step up model available No ability to network the output No ability to install a hard drive or at least Compact Flash slot.
Review:
Nice enough looking unit and build quality is nice. It could benifit from a larger display. What's the point of a remote if you have to sit right in front of the unit to see what you're doing. The video output is o.k., but why do I want to waste the life of my TV just to see what I'm listening to. The remote is fairly simple, bu the unit could benefit from a volume control and that goes for remote volumn cabability also. As it is you need a programmable remote or you are forced to sit there with two remotes. One for the radio and one for the receiver or pre-amp to control the volume. The preset is o.k., but again I would like more choices than A or B. It would even be nice to be able to label them with your own labels. A network output would be cool so you could send the output to your PC for recording. Lacking that even a Compact Flash card slot would be helpful. Of course the ability to add a hard drive would be very cool. Lastly, since this unit has a the best DAC in it other than another unit I won't mention for $2500, it would be nice if it had a balanced output. All said and done, it's a nice servicable unit, but it lacks any type of feature set. This in itself wouldn't be that bad, but it doesn't appear as if there is even an upgrade model available. Being new to XM, I was suprised at how little the receivers have evolved.

Review:
I have subscribed to XM Radio for about four years and used the Delphi portable tuner - at home only. My XM is connected to a high grade audio/visual component system (I also have a two-channel audiophile system in the home (more of this later). I did not have great expectations for the Polk, sonically. I bought it mainly for the aesthetics and I was getting fed up with my Delphi falling off the cabinet. So I was very pleasantly surprised with the sound improvement from the Polk over the Delphi - no other changes were made. I am using the analog-out connection and so I can only put the sound improvement down to the better DAC converter and, probably to a lesser extent, the power supply of the Polk. It would be interesting to connect it to my two-channel system using either of the digital-outs and assess the difference that my Musical Fidelity DAC makes. I doubt that it will be that much better though. I am very pleased with this unit.

"[Listening to XM radio on the Polk XRt12] was the first riveting music experience I'd had in a while—I didn't dare touch the dial...This is the first time I've felt that satellite radio could strike the same emotional chord as CDs or high-quality MP3s."
"Lots of companies talk about quality however, so I was skeptical up until the moment I plugged it into Yamaha's CinemaStation DVX-S650 home theater for a test. I was so impressed with what I heard, I settled down for a long winter's listen."
"Like Polk says, even if you buy the XRt12 receiver, you should hang onto your CD player. Of course, you may never use it again."

"The sound quality on this tuner is amazing! When listening to the tuner using the digital output you will hear amazing clarity that you won't get from hooking up your SkyFi or Roady in your home. If you don't have a newer home A/V receiver with digital inputs, don't worry because the analog output of this tuner sounds very, very good (the XRt12 uses Burr-Brown Digital-to-Analog Converter)."
"Bottom line: I'm impressed. I was getting frustrated with XM's lack of a home receiver, but now I'm speechless. Whether this is a radio for yourself, or a gift, it's $299 well-spent."

"It [The Polk XRt12 tuner] has a feature that must have been designed with relentless music seekers like me in mind: the Memory button. If I hear something I like, all I have to do is press the XRt12's front-panel Memory button and it will retain the text scroll identifying the artist and song (10 songs total); later, I can access the Memory Recall function and get out my notepad."
"I'd dabbled with XM a while back, auditioning Sony's original car/home satellite receiver, a product whose mediocre sound quality was surpassed only by its phenomenally clunky user interface. But the Polk XRt12 was bruited as a horse of a different color.
For one thing, it wasn't a product scaled down to be slipped into a docking cradle in a dashboard or boombox—it was designed around a component-sized (17" wide) chassis and packed with a Burr-Brown DAC, a special power supply, a high-quality adjustable gain card, and a circuit topology that places the power supply, display, outputs, preamp, and tuner on discrete circuit boards in the quest for lower noise/minimized interference.
It also has something I've never seen on a satellite radio tuner: digital outs. The analog outputs sound surprisingly robust, with solid bass and timbre that were extremely natural compared to what I'd heard emanating from the Sony. Attach the XRt12 to a fancy-schmancy outboard DAC, however, such as the Musical Fidelity X-DACV3 I had on hand, and it gets even better.
"If I say that my initial experience with XM is that the sound is better than the average FM station, that's faint praise. But I think it's better than that—at least through the Polk XRt12."

"I had to write and tell you how superb your XM radio Audiophile player is. I had my XM radio plugged in through the home cradle with the analog output...it was good, but nothing compared me for how superb your unit is. I have good equipment, good cables and your unit produces CD quality music for thousands less than my CD player. Thank you for a wonderful product!"

"I'm convinced that, sometime during the last 30 years, robots took over FM radio. You have to admit that they're consistent -- consistently bad."
"...FM has been taken over by corporate America, with the result that the independents are all but dead, and along with them most of the innovative and cutting-edge programming. By the time you hear anything coming out of your radio today, it's been programmed, processed, and homogenized to make sure it's just like everything else. This is no way to run a radio station. Judging by the droves of people abandoning FM as a music source, it seems a lot of you agree."
"If you love music, you want satellite radio. Period. As far as I'm concerned, this is the coolest thing since sliced bread. No, it's way cooler than that. Really."
"Suffice it to say that the Polk XRt12 offers a number of advantages that fully justify its price and status as a dedicated tuner in your home system."
"the XRt12's construction and electronics will squeeze every last drop of performance out of the medium that it is currently possible to squeeze. Overall, I found the sound quality excellent. While still a notch below that of CD, it was clearly superior to MP3 and FM broadcasts."
"The Polk XRt12 XM tuner is a no-brainer. A lot of equipment cycles through our house over the course of a year, but this unit has completed a one-way trip...Its sound quality is good enough to satisfy my audiophile tendencies, and the continuous voyage of musical discovery is enough to keep both of us settled into our listening chairs for hours on end. I don't care where you live or what your musical tastes are -- the XRt12 should be on your short list to audition."

"In our age of MP3 acceptable sound quality, the Polk XM tuner is more than satisfying. I've noticed that it's playing in our house for background music constantly, telling me we are enjoying it. The only problem is the fight for which channel."
