Great sound should pull you in, not make you wonder whether you belong.
Too often it comes with a velvet rope: jargon to learn, gear to flex, rules about what you’re supposed to know before you’re allowed to enjoy it.
At Polk, we’ve never seen it that way.
Back in 1972, a handful of Johns Hopkins grads with a couple hundred dollars between them started building speakers out of a ramshackle 18th-century Baltimore mansion. They didn’t set out to create audio for a private club. They wanted to make the kind of sound they loved—powerful, immersive, full of feeling—and put it within reach of more people.
Every dollar mattered. Every material choice mattered. Every design had to prove itself in the listening.
More than 50 years later, that idea still drives us.

The experience, not the ego
We believe great sound should bring you closer to what you love: the songs you know by heart, the movies you quote with friends, the games everyone gathers for, and the playlists that keep a party moving. You don’t need to drop a paycheck to feel like you’re in the front row; you need speakers engineered to deliver the experience, not the ego.
That might mean hearing a familiar record reveal something new. Feeling a movie soundtrack move through the room. Catching every word, even when the action gets loud. Giving game day more energy—or letting the playlist follow the party outside.
The best audio does more than reproduce what is playing. It brings people into the moment together.
A louder expression of the same belief
You may notice Polk looking a little different these days: bigger type, bolder colors, sharper edges. That’s not a new attitude. It’s the original one, cranked up to eleven.
Great sound belongs in living rooms, dens, and backyards. It belongs in movie nights, listening sessions, and wherever life gets loud. It belongs to lifelong audio fans and people buying their first real speakers. It belongs to anyone who knows the feeling when the right song hits at exactly the right time.
That’s what Polk has always been here for.
