Rated 5 out of 5 by from great sound I bought a pair of these about a year ago to become the surround speakers in my home theater. I did not/could not use the typical "on wall" surround speakers in my home theater and placing ceiling speakers was the way to go. I power these with an 80 watt per channel Emotiva UPA-500 amp. The midrange and especially the bass from these speakers is amazing! These really fill the bill to provide a surround soundstage. I am using Polk A1 bookshelf for the rear back surrounds in my 7.1 system but as good as those are, these are better it seems, especially for bass. Installation was as easy as it gets, and the speaker grills are so thin and flat that they disappera in the ceiling. Do not hesitate to use these speakers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I only review stuff I really like or really don't I've listened to lots of in ceiling speaker. Mid and highs are great with these like many speakers in this price range but what I really like is the bass. Often in ceiling speakers produce a kind of thump in the lowest tones instead of a musical note and I hear a gap between the high bass and the low midrange. To my ears the RT70s don't try to produce really deep bass but give very good detail in the lower bass right through to the mids and highs. And the way the woofer is mounted up inside the housing and ported to the front makes much them less fussy about what they are mounted too than other designs. Build quality is excellent, clamping tabs have just the right amount of friction. Make sure you have lots of room above the drywall, these speakers are tall. The magnetic grills are awesome.

Questions

I understand the mid-bass driver cannot be adjusted. However, in the pictures the driver looks like it is fixed angle (i.e. it's not pointing straight down to the ground if installed in a ceiling). What is the angle the drive is installed at? 15 degrees?

Hello, This speaker is angled at 15 degrees so you can rotate the baffle and aim it towards the listening position.

Hello! For the 80 F/X-LS or the 80 F/X-RT, are there specific distances or height angles they should be placed from the main listening position? Tweeter/driver angle? for in ceiling side and rear surrounds with 8ft ceiling and want ideal position.

Hello, there are a few variables to consider when installing in-ceiling speakers. Ceiling joists, the height of the ceiling, seating location, room acoustics (carpeting preferred), and speaker placement. Once you have located the joists, plan your installation. Given the option, place the speakers away from the wall or corners. No closer than 2 feet, if possible. Is it possible to install these 80F/X-LS in the wall instead of ceiling? I moved into new house with 20' ceiling and already own two of these speakers to use as rear speakers.

Hello, and thank you for your question. The Polk Audio 80 F/X-LS can be used as IN-WALL speakers; however, they are designed as IN-CEILING and will perform best as IN-CEILING speakers.

Does the 80 F/X-LS need a back box or enclosure to maximize its potential?

Hello, the Polk Audio 80 F/X-LS In-Ceiling speaker does not require a Back Box to achieve top performance. They are an "infinite baffle design". It is designed to be placed where the back is open to the attic or between floors behind the drywall.

For an all-ceiling 5.1 or 7.1 setup, which is better for both music and atmos movies, the 80F/X-LS or 80F/X-RT? Is one better than the other for L-C-R if they are both used? Is it more optimal to use a more conventional center channel speaker with these?

Hello, between the two, the 80F/X-LS is more refined as it is equipped with dual Ring-Radiator Tweeters. The 80F/X-LS and RT are best suited for surround sound applications and not recommended for L-C-R or Atmos. For L-C-R and Atmos channels, consider our 900-LS in-ceiling speaker. A conventional center channel is always best if possible. If needing to install it in the wall, consider our 255C-LS. If the center speaker can be set on a stand under the Television, look to the Reserve R400 Center Channel Speaker.

These might be a great option for Atmos speakers that need some directional flexibility. What are the angles for the two tweeters and are they adjustable? Also, what is the angle the woofer is mounted at?

Hi Curious George, For the 80 F/X-LS, the tweeters can be angled up to 15 degrees. There is no angular adjustment for the mid-bass driver.
