What Better Sounds Like

As we get older, we learn what better looks like, feels like, tastes like and even drives like. But nobody teaches us what better sounds like. Better isn’t best – it’s the road to best.

Reference quality sound

Pure, unmasked sound

Patented X-Port

Traditional ported speaker designs increase low- frequency performance, but often mask midrange details due to port resonances. Polk's proprietary X-Port uses specially tuned eigentone filters to cancel out unwanted resonances. With X-Port you get the best of both worlds: tight, distortion-free bass and a superbly detailed midrange.

Form and Function

Exceptional Cabinetry

Reserve’s sleek cabinetry hides a world of audio innovation. Cabinets are carefully cross-braced to best eliminate unwanted interior resonances. Rounded exterior corners help disperse sound broadly around the room with minimal diffraction, creating an open sound stage.

Hi-Res Audio Certified

Your sound is only as good as your source. With Hi-Res Audio certification, the Polk Reserve R100 delivers clear and detailed high-frequency response. Female vocals are particularly smooth, with exceptional clarity and without coloration. Plus, a minimum support of 40kHz perfectly reproduces the latest Hi-Res Audio files with improved audio extension.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reference quality sound in a nice looking package I bought this Polk R100 as a desktop speaker to use as computer speakers. It's on the large size in that application but still manageable on a desk. I propped them up a few inches on stands to get the speaker away from the reflective surface of the desk, which is absolutely mandatory for best sound quality. I am driving it with a Topping Class D amp which has no problem even with the slightly lower impedance load of this speaker. I've tried other speakers before but this seems to be the sweet spot. You get the trickle down features from the Legend series . The secret sauce is the Ring Radiator Tweeter which is clean sounding without harshness. On some material there is a slight sense that the treble is boosted a bit from neutral but it's not objectionable at all. In return, it sounds very detailed and clear. Midrange sounds like vocals are this speaker's strength, it's very solid, good body, no sense of exaggeration or "hyping" of the vocals. The bass is a bit limited given this is a compact bookshelf speaker, reaching down to 58Hz before it completely drops off. But the speaker doesn't artifically boost the bass at all and what's there is tight and controlled. So a sub is absolutely recommended but I'm still enjoying listening to it without a sub. I may add one later when the funds allow. Imaging is precise but not aways the widest, but that's ok. I'd rather have precise imaging over a wide diffuse sound. The only thing that gives away that this isn't a top of the line speaker is the vinyl veneer wrap. Up close it doesn't look convincing, but the wood-like appearance from afar gives it a bit of class. I like the rounded edges, and overall clean look.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unwhelmed The wood veneer was awful. The sound was average.

Questions

Can these speakers be placed horizontally instead of vertically?

Asked by: Chum
From a "can it be done" point of view, yes. They can be placed horizontally instead of vertically, and most users are likely to not notice any differences in the audio output. That said, it is considered an acoustic blunder. The way the innards of the speaker are designed, when placed horizontally, the speaker may not operate to its full potential. The drivers are aligned vertically and when placed flat, the stereo imaging gets affected. Nonetheless, you are welcome to try both orientations and see if either makes a difference for you.
