Hello, is it possible and safe to plug bass reflex on these speakers ? I listen to music at medium volume.

Hello, We would not recommend plugging the bass port on these speakers as that will impede the bass response of the speakers and put a damper on the low end performance. The port itself is designed to provide greater surface area and smoother air flow for more output and less distortion compared to conventional ported speakers and is not a port that is easy to plug.

The depth measurement of 13.8", does this include the Powerport on the back? And does the Powerport need any space behind it to be effective? (ie it should not be mounted flush against a wall).

Hello, the depth does include the powerport, we would recommend at least 2 feet away from the wall to allow for the powerport to breathe and help improve the low end effectiveness.

I pieced my own system. 2 ES20 front speakers, 2 ES10 back speakers, XT10 Subwoofer and the ES35 Center Channel. Will this combo work? Would a different combo be better? The XT10 will work? Also, I am reading a speaker stand can make a difference?

Hello, This would be an excellent system, I can recommend that perhaps you match the subwoofer to the ES series by going with a HTS subwoofer like the HTS 10 https://www.polkaudio.com/en-us/product/home-speakers/subwoofers/hts-10/112606-01-00-101.html Typically as you go up in series, there are improvements to the overall speaker design that help improve playback and how it sounds, ranging from the design on the speaker cabinet to reduce extra vibrations, to crossover components to output a cleaner signal, it is usually best to pair speakers with other speakers that feature these improvements to get the best out of your system. As for the speaker stands, these can help a good bit in decoupling them and allow them to not create extra resonants during playback. It will also help get your bookshelf speakers in a higher position which is ideal for your listening position and give you the flexibility to better position your speakers to create a more lush soundstage.

I have enjoyed the previous generation Polk Audio S20 bookshelf speakers for several years. What improvements in sound can I expected if I upgrade to the latest generation ES20?

There will be some similarities between the S20 and the ES20, mainly with the drivers and bass port designs. What you will find is an updated cabinet that reduces unwanted internal standing waves and resonances for less coloration and distortion of your sound as well as an updated and improved crossover lending to a great sound that is outputted by the ES20. If you choose to upgrade, you may find that you will enjoy the ES20 more than you did the S20.

The HTS 10 Subwoofer is recommended with the ES20 Bookshelf speakers.
