Rated 5 out of 5 by DuctTapeTheory from A musically satisfying fit I moved into a smaller apartment and could not bring my larger speakers--they don't sound so great at lower volume and the footprint was too big for the space. I tried some bookshelf speakers with stands but couldn't get clean bass, even when applying a high-pass filter from my subwoofers. I read some about the Reserve series, and while I craved the R600, knew that I needed a more modest low end and mid bass. So, I figured I'd try the R500s. I have spent nearly six months with these speakers and am constantly impressed by how good they present the music. Currently, I have been deeply satisfied with the sound of the R500s. They present the music very well. They are more balanced in terms of the musicality of the instruments from delicate brushes on the drum skins to full bodied horn sections. In the past, some horns could appear bright on my system. Not anymore. The Polks give me a much more musical soundstage. I am running dual subwoofers to fill out the low end and I recommend subs because I am getting a deeper and fuller sound--and importantly for me this is at lower volume, which is appropriate for my smaller space. The R500s present sweet, clean, and full-bodied music from high-res digital, cd-quality digital and vinyl formats. And they look good in my room and are easy to move for serious listening sessions--my wife doesn't appreciate them being 40" from the front wall. However, she does like the sound and she thinks they look pretty sharp in our space!

We upgraded from the POLK Audio TSi300 - Black ( 2012 ) to the Reserve R500 (White), and its like night and day…I’ve found myself watching movies that have been watched multiple times previously, and all i have to say about that is WOW!! I currently await two sets of S15’s to use as surround sound… Good job POLK!

Questions

Is there a big difference in sound quality between Reserve R500 and S55 Elite ? If yes, in which way? I have currently S50 (old model) which I love but I would move to another level of sound quality

Difficult question to answer, as the ES55 and the R600 are more comparable in size and output (both 6 1/2" drivers) than the ES55 and R500. The Reserve line offers more advanced driver and crossover technology, presenting a more refined sound quality. Considering budget, deciding between the ES55 and R500 may come down to room size and overall experience desired. If the room is small to medium size and is paired with a subwoofer in a music/movie system, the R500 speakers would be my choice. If High volume in a medium to large room is desired, the ES55 speakers may be the better choice.

What's the thread size on the outrigger spikes? I took one of the supplied spikes to a local big hardware store and could not find a thread match in either metric or SAE. I want to make my own spikes with a much sharper point to penetrate the carpet.

Are the R500 and R600 2.5 way or 2 way speakers?

The Polk specs say that both the mid/woofs crossover at 2500hz and extend down to around 49hz. So it’s a two way. Simple crossover networks with fewer parts has to be a good thing. Definitely should use a sub or two with these if you can. Some solid engineering and tech in the R500’s.
