Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving the new towers Wow, so impressed with the sound. Much more bass than expected. Mids are full and highs are strong. Not painful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Polk R600 is a delight So I bought the R600’s after a friend let me audition the R500’s in my room. Mine is a difficult room which simply swallows bass frequencies at the 30 Hz range and below. The R500’s nearly broke thru, but once again, the room was problematic. The R600’s however, finally achieved my version of audio nirvana without the use of a subwoofer. I’m of the opinion that you should select the best performing speaker for your room that you can before entertaining low end sub support. Great speaker. I love the overall sound and the overall range is quite impressive. These disappear easily and image fantastically. I’m very delighted, and have waited a long time for a Polk speaker of this caliber. I know everything is built at a price point, but after complete internal investigation of the crossover, drivers, and enclosure I love what I see and hear.

Questions

Is this a 2-way or 2.5 way speaker? One reviewer said this was actually a 2.5-way speaker. If this is true can you please explain what this means and where the second crossover point is?

Asked by: Anonymous
You are correct, there is speculation about this. The specs, according to Polk, states it is a 2-way speaker. It lists the speaker having only one crossover point - at 2700 HZ (or 2.7Khz) - meaning the lower drivers will not play above this line. It is a "high-pass" filter, limiting signals from 2.7Khz and up to go only to the tweeter. Polk does not list a Mid-range / Mid-bass crossover frequency. Meaning both lower drivers (of the same size) should play the exact same signal from 2.7 Khz and down. But many of us suspect it is a 2 1/2-way speaker - which limits one of the two bass drivers differently. For example, it could make the middle driver play from 2.7 Khz to as low as it can, but make the lowest driver only play from 300Hz - 400Hz and down. So essentially, one woofer for midrange and bass, and one for bass only. So, there would indeed be another crossover point involved, however, the middle driver would not carry a low-pass filter (once again, it's playing midbass & bass - all the way down as low as it can). This is what would make it a 2 1/2-way as opposed to a 3-way (mid-bass is not limited). However, Polk's specs do not confirm this. Someone with a broader understanding of the internal crossover may be able to tell. I would provide a picture of its crossover, but the post section does not permit uploading pics. I can tell you from what I've seen while playing them, that the bottom driver seems to behave differently than the middle driver. If it was a 2-way, the driver excursion should appear exactly the same. They do appear to be acting differently.
